For someone who is in pain or harshly aware of their mortality, 'presence' of another is far more valuable than anything they can say. Why is this? Because 'presence', in its pure form, is the untouched eternal that is beyond mind/body.
In the experience of pain or fear, our attention is pulled intensely into mind/body and out of any 'presence' we may or may not be aware of in us. Attention becomes fiercely focused into the mind/body (the surface) and turmoil and distress are the results.
By consciously dropping into 'presence' we stop feeding the fire, and the suffering dies down. This also happens unknowingly in others when we are with them and maintain a deep connection to 'presence'.
