Every thought that arises is like an unlit match.
We wake up in the morning. We unconsciously open the box. We don't necessarily choose which match, in fact more often than not, we are aware of picking it out of the box. Do we grasp it tightly and strike it? Or do we look at it and loosen our grip?
Our habit is to strike the match, then pick up another and another, or we might strike a whole bunch together.
Thoughts that we give our attention to will flare up, and unless we are careful can easily create a blaze.
We may not be able to stop ourselves from lighting matches, but if we can learn to watch the flame, it soon burns out.
